Mixing Saltwater Correctly
Mixing saltwater looks simple: water in a bucket, salt in, stir. In practice this routine is where mistakes are made that worsen the result of a water change or, at worst, cause a parameter disturbance in the tank. Salt added in the wrong order, water heated too early, or unmeasured salinity can make a water change more harmful than helpful.
This article goes through the mixing process step by step: which water to start from, in what order the salt is added, how long the water is mixed, why temperature matters, and what is measured before the water is used.
1. The starting point: RO/DI water
Saltwater preparation begins with pure water — always RO/DI water, not tap water. The salt mix is designed to be added to fully ion-free water: it contains exactly the ions, in the right proportions, that turn water into seawater, and its composition is calculated assuming the starting water contributes nothing. Tap water brings its own impurities — phosphate, silicate, nitrate, copper and other metals — which add on top of the components the salt mix supplies and distort the result.
In practice this means the water produced by an RO/DI unit (TDS close to zero) is the foundation of the whole process. If the source water is impure, no later step fixes it — every error carries straight into the tank.
2. Salt into water — not water into salt
The basic rule is to add the salt to the water, not the water to the salt. The container is filled first with the entire required volume of RO/DI water, and the salt is added to it gradually.
The reason is chemical. When salt is poured dry into a container and water is added on top, the local concentration briefly rises very high, and calcium and carbonate can precipitate as calcium carbonate before they have time to dissolve evenly. The precipitate removes from the water exactly the components you want in it, and the result falls below the target values.
The practical guidance is to divide the salt into two or three batches and add each batch to the water while stirring, until the previous one has dissolved, before the next. This way the concentration rises evenly and no oversaturated zone forms anywhere.
3. Mixing time and aeration
In the mixing container you should always use a sufficiently powerful stream pump that gets the whole volume of water properly moving — not just a small circulation pump. Strong flow keeps the salt in motion, speeds up dissolution and prevents components from settling on the bottom of the container. The water is mixed until the salt is fully dissolved and the water has cleared. It is worth directing mild turbulence at the surface for gas exchange, so the water equilibrates with the CO₂ in the air.
Mixing time depends on the salt. Many traditional salts benefit from several hours of mixing, and the established general guideline is to mix for about 8–24 hours before use. Some modern salts, however, are designed to be used within just a few hours — for example, the maker of Red Sea Coral Pro recommends only about four hours of mixing. The manufacturer’s instruction always takes precedence over the general rule, because the mixes are formulated differently.
The essential point is that the salt must be fully dissolved and the salinity at the right level before the water is used. Undissolved salt on the bottom means unused component is left in the water and the salinity is in reality lower than the target.
4. Temperature and precipitation
Temperature is the most underrated variable in saltwater mixing. The main rule: the water is heated only after the salt has fully dissolved, not before.
Heat speeds up the precipitation of calcium carbonate, especially with high-alkalinity salts. If the container is heated before the salt has dissolved, calcium and carbonate precipitate before even dissolution, and the water loses both calcium and alkalinity. In practice the mixing is best done at room temperature and the temperature adjusted only at the end — or the heater allowed to raise the temperature only after dissolution.
The temperature of the replacement water is adjusted at the end to as close as possible to the tank’s temperature, so the water change does not cause thermal shock. The same applies to salinity: the replacement water’s and the tank’s values must match.
5. “Aging” vs. immediate use
Mixing for more than a day is called aging the water. Its purpose is to let the salt dissolve fully and the water equilibrate — pH and gases settle and the components distribute evenly.
Many modern quality salts, however, are designed to dissolve fast and be used almost immediately. NYOS Pure, for example, dissolves in about five minutes thanks to pure ingredients and a small grain size, and according to the manufacturer requires no aging at all; Aquaforest Reef Salt mixes for immediate use (storage in a sealed container for at most ~5 days). Tropic Marin Pro Reef is ready to use in just 30–60 minutes, though 2–4 hours of mixing is recommended for the best result. High-alkalinity fast salts, such as Red Sea Coral Pro (alkalinity ~12 dKH), are by contrast designed to be used soon after mixing: the manufacturer does not recommend storing Coral Pro for more than 12 hours, because the elevated calcium and alkalinity begin to precipitate and the values drop. Such salts are mixed just before use, not for storage.
In other words, “longer is better” does not hold in general. With a traditional salt, longer mixing is beneficial; with a high-alkalinity fast salt, too long a storage leads to exactly the precipitation you want to avoid. The decisive information is in your own salt’s instructions.
6. Checking salinity and parameters
Mixed water is not used on the strength of the salt’s dosing instruction alone — salinity is always measured before use. The dosing amount is a starting estimate, but the real salinity depends on the accuracy of the water volume, the salt’s moisture, and the measurement.
The target value is typically 35 ppt (specific gravity about 1.026 at 25 °C), which matches the salinity of natural seawater and to which the reference values of ICP labs and additives are calibrated. Measuring salinity and converting between units is its own topic, worth mastering before using mixed water — it also includes refractometer calibration and the effect of temperature on the reading.
The replacement water’s parameters should be matched to the tank’s values. If the tank’s alkalinity, calcium and magnesium differ from the values the salt produces, a large water change shifts those values — sometimes in the desired direction, sometimes not. It is worth knowing the values the salt produces and comparing them to the tank’s base elements, so the water change stays controlled.
7. Choosing and storing salt
Salts differ from one another above all in the level of alkalinity and the base elements. Low-alkalinity salts (close to natural seawater’s ~7–8 dKH) suit tanks where alkalinity is kept at the natural level; high-alkalinity salts (e.g. ~12 dKH) are aimed at tanks where coral consumption is high and the values are kept elevated. The choice is made according to where your own tank’s target values are set — not according to which is “strongest”.
The quality salts most commonly used in Europe sit for the most part close to natural seawater. Below are the reference values stated by the manufacturers of four common salts at standard salinity (Aquaforest 33 ppt, the others 35 ppt); note that batches vary slightly and the true value must always be measured from your own mix.

Tropic Marin Pro Reef is deliberately low-alkalinity and aimed at tanks where alkalinity, calcium and magnesium are supplemented separately with additives or a calcium reactor — this explains why its fresh mix has a lower alkalinity than the others. NYOS Pure and Fauna Marin Professional document every batch with an ICP analysis. Fauna Marin also offers a tip to speed up dissolution by adding a small amount of carbonated mineral water (about 100 ml / 100 l), where the momentarily lowered pH helps the salt dissolve.
Dry-salt storage affects the result directly. Salt is hygroscopic: it binds humidity, clumps, and its composition can change if the package is left open. An opened bag should be moved to an airtight container and kept closed. Clumped salt doses unevenly and may have partly reacted with moisture, which shows up as deviating values.
8. The most common mistakes
The same mistakes recur in mixing, and they are easy to avoid once you know them:
- Using tap water instead of RO/DI — brings impurities straight into the replacement water.
- Water-into-salt order — local oversaturation precipitates calcium and alkalinity.
- Heating the water before dissolution — can precipitate calcium carbonate; heat only after dissolution.
- Long storage of a high-alkalinity fast salt — values drop as precipitation occurs; mix just before use.
- Skipping the salinity measurement — the dosing instruction is an estimate, not a measurement.
- Leaving a temperature or salinity difference — causes a shock to the tank during the water change.
- An open salt bag — humidity clumps and changes the salt’s composition.
9. Practical checklist
A working mixing routine in brief:
- Fill the container with RO/DI water (TDS ≈ 0).
- Add the salt to the water in batches, stirring, until fully dissolved.
- Mix with a sufficiently powerful stream pump for the time stated by your own salt; keep mild turbulence at the surface.
- Heat the water to the tank’s temperature only after dissolution.
- Measure salinity (target ~35 ppt) and adjust if needed.
- Match the replacement water’s temperature and parameters to the tank’s values before use.
- Store the dry salt tightly sealed.
Mixing saltwater is a routine, but it is as precise as any operation that affects the tank’s chemistry. When the process is right, the water change does what it is meant to: it restores stability rather than breaking it.
